Frequently Asked Questions

When do we find out all the details?

In early July, we email our Summer Mailing which includes letters, a more detailed calendar of events, an overview of extended care and vacation care, volunteer forms, bus shuttle information, hot lunch information, etc.

If you are needing specific information before then, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us. Our office is open all summer.

Does my child need to do any summer work?

Lower School
For students entering Grades 1-4, there is no required summer work. We will provide you with the Summer Learning Adventures 2025, which contains ideas for summer activities and math projects. We always recommend that students read during the summer months.

Middle School
Students entering Grades 5-8 do have some required summer work. This information will be sent out to families in early to mid-June. You will receive math packets with mostly logic games and puzzles. Students are required to read one assigned novel and one or two student-choice novels. Additionally, there are required Spanish/Mandarin review packets designed to help students keep the language vocabulary and concepts from the previous year fresh.  (Don’t worry if your child has not taken a foreign language before.)

Will I have the chance to talk to Keys teachers about my child before the school year starts?

Yes. In mid-August, all families (new and returning) receive an online student questionnaire, which is designed to help our faculty get to know your child. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to sign up for a conference prior to the start of the school year.

How and when do I share information or documentation with Keys School about my child's medical needs, social-emotional needs, or learning difference(s)?

Information or documentation about your child’s medical needs or learning differences can be shared anytime before the start of the school year.

For students entering Grades K-8, medical information should be shared in Magnus Health, our secure student health information platform, by AUGUST 1, 2025.  We will be sending login information for Magnus in July.  We ask that your child’s pediatrician fill out the Medical Form in the link provided above.

Documentation about your child’s learning needs (e.g. IEP, Evaluation, or doctor’s notes) can be shared with our Lower School Counselor, Sharon Diamond, and Learning Specialist and Coordinator of Student Support, Patricia Chang. If you have a Middle School student, please share the documentation with our Middle School Counselor, Dr. Cathy Hsu, and Learning Specialist Soraya Saed.

Will there be opportunities to connect with classmates and other parents before the start of the school year?

Yes. In July, you will receive your login information for KeysNet, our secure online site, and you will be able to view directory information for families in your grade level.  Individual class and teacher/advisor assignments are announced just before the start of the school year.

Grade Level Room Parents will also reach out to all families in their grade in early July to schedule grade-level socials during the summer.

What kinds of volunteer opportunities are there, and when can we sign up?

Volunteering: Keys School Volunteer Interest Form

There are many opportunities to get involved both on and off campus at Keys. We encourage you to contribute in a way that best fits your style and schedule and feels meaningful to you. Please see a sampling of our many volunteer opportunities below.

All School Volunteer Opportunities

From the Bing Concert Hall at Stanford to the Santa Cruz Mountains, sign-up to chaperone fun-filled field trips and Outdoor Ed! Keep a lookout for grade-level sign-ups as trips get closer.

Cultural Celebrations
Inclusivity and diversity are at the heart of Keys. Connect with your teachers to see how you can contribute to cultural celebrations in the classroom.

Open Houses
Welcome prospective families to Keys! Parents visiting love to hear insights from parents already part of our community. Share your stories, wisdom and all there is to love about life at Keys! These take place from October through January. To share your time at open houses, please contact our Admission Team, or look for information in our weekly Wednesday Letter.

Lower School Volunteer Opportunities

Lower School Lunch and Recess Help
Participate in the fun recess and lunch routine of our Kindergarten-4th grade students! Help with supervision on the playground and in the park, and assist with lunchtime. We need volunteers daily from 11:30-12:30 pm. Sign-ups are posted at the start of the school year with dates through December, and again in December with dates January through June.

Tea and Shelving with Ms. Merridew
Swing by the Lower School Library for a cup of tea while helping to shelve returned library books. More information about sign-ups will be sent out during the year.

Ice Skating
This is the coolest opportunity … no pun intended! Help our young ice skaters in getting to/from Winter Lodge and lace up skates. Dates vary by grade level. A call for volunteers will come from teachers as we get closer to your grade’s sessions.

More grade-level opportunities will be shared throughout the school year. Keep a lookout in weekly room parent emails, and emails from your teachers.

Middle School Volunteer Opportunities

Carpools
Support Keys Athletics by helping us get to our game destinations! (Nov-Jan: Boys Basketball and Girls Soccer, Jan-Mar: Girls Basketball and Boys Soccer, Mar-May: Girls volleyball and Co-ed Tennis)

Grade-level opportunities will be shared throughout the school year. Keep a lookout in weekly room parent emails, and emails from your teachers.

KSA Leadership Opportunities

The search for many room parent, co-chair, and leadership roles typically begins in the spring before the upcoming year. While some roles are filled at the start of the school year, we welcome volunteers to engage with committees and event activities throughout the year as opportunities arise.

Become a Room Parent
Support your fellow parents in staying informed about grade-level activities and upcoming events by sending weekly emails, helping to coordinate parent socials, and more!

Co-Chair an Event
School events like Fall Picnic, Skate Night, Spring Picnic, Spring Benefit, and the 8th Grade Banquet all happen with the help of volunteer parent co-chairs.

Volunteer for Specific Events
Volunteer sign-ups for events are posted about 4-6 weeks before the event date. From setup and clean-up to serving desserts and keeping the beverages stocked … we can always use extra hands! Sign-ups are included in weekly room parent emails and the weekly Wednesday Letter.

Faculty and Staff Appreciation Committee (FSA)
We love our teachers and staff! This committee includes volunteers from across grade levels who help organize and support activities at both the Middle School and Lower School campuses. From planning luncheons to celebrating birthdays … our teachers are sure to feel the love!

Keys Community Cares Committee (KCC)
Giving back to our community and participating in service-oriented projects fits perfectly with our values at Keys! This committee meets twice per year to plan 2-3  community events where Keys students and families can give back. Additionally, the KCC helps coordinate internal community support when members of our Keys community need extra care or helping hands due to family crises or other life events.

Common Ground Committee
Keys is proud to partner with the Common Ground Speaker Series filled with experts, authors and researchers who approach topics and issues that come along with parenting! With a variety of parent talks each school year, this committee helps to promote the series, chat with other Keys parents about the topics and occasionally plan a coffee social before/after the talk!
