Algebra in 5th!

“In 5th Grade, we are working to lay some foundations of Algebra. In 8th grade, students have to understand expressions like 2 (2x +1). Our 5th-grade students to make these concepts concrete. They were given bags (variables) and blocks (constants). They had to build out expressions like ‘twice 2 bags and 1 block’. In doing this, they can then transfer this understanding to pictures. They draw models to solve word problems. By the time they confront algebra in the higher grades, their foundation and understanding are solid, and they move through higher math with greater ease and confidence!” Ms. Lieu, 5-6th Grade Math Teacher
