From Ancient Egypt to the Arab Spring, students examine how images communicate power and history.

In 6th Grade Social Studies, students study ancient civilizations while also exploring current events from those regions to understand the dynamic nature of their geographies, peoples, and cultures. After completing the Ancient Egypt unit in December, students have been learning to analyze meaning and messages in political cartoons, a form of communication that has existed across cultures for thousands of years. Because many people were historically illiterate, imagery played a powerful role in shaping public opinion. Students are now applying their critical thinking skills by analyzing political cartoons about the Arab Spring, including one entirely in Arabic. Through imagery alone, they interpret meaning and recognize its power. They then discuss the events of the Arab Spring and consider whether this historical period has ended or continues today.
