“Today, I’m going to explain what blockchain is. Who knows what the internet is?”

First Grade gathered to welcome our next Mystery Guest: First Grade mom, Dr. Angie!
“Today, I’m going to explain what blockchain is. Who knows what the internet is?”
One student responded, “When you go on the computer, you are on something that is on the screen.”
“Yes, it is a common place for people to share information.” Dr. Angie responded
She then gave us an example to help the students understand the big concept of blockchain. (The teachers were eager to learn, too!) Students came up to help with the example: a difficult math problem broken apart. She assigned those smaller bits to individual students to solve. Students brought their answers back, and she put them together to create a final answer.
Angie said, “This is the first concept of blockchain! It is the power of everyone solving a problem together.” Everyone can access blockchain when we want to solve a hard problem – lots of people solve a small part.
Students had interesting questions. “Why is it called blockchain?”
Angie explained that it is like our grade. 1A is a block, and 1B is a block. But, together the classes work on the same subjects and share the same information with each other. You can share this information and link it like a chain.
“People build things like buildings. They are architects. I am like an architect – but on the internet with blockchains.” She hopes that blockchain can help people more than just in finance and that all information stored on the internet will be free to help everyone solve big problems and live better lives!
