Keys School Faculty and Staff Profiles!
Our Associate Head of Curriculum, Community, and Culture, Dr. Elizabeth Veal!
“I’ve been part of Keys for one year, but my journey in education began more than 30 years ago. Born and raised in San Francisco, I’ve served as a mentor teacher, an elementary school vice-principal and principal, a county director of teacher and administrator development, and a school district superintendent before coming to Keys as the AHCCC. At the heart of all of these roles is a commitment to social justice leadership: collaborating with others to create learning systems that are equity-focused, engaging, rigorous, and always centered on students. I earned my B.A. in English from UCLA, a Master’s in Education and Multiple Subjects Teaching Credential from San Francisco State University, a Master’s in Education and Administrative Services Credential from the Principal Leadership Institute at UC Berkeley, and a doctorate in Educational Leadership for Social Justice from Loyola Marymount University.
I am most curious when I’m facing something challenging. I meet challenges with questions: Why is this happening? What can I learn from this? How might I have contributed to it? I look to people I admire, those who inspire me, as models of curiosity, and am motivated by curiosity to learn more about myself, others, and the world around me. What motivates me most, however, is making learning exciting, interesting, and relevant for children. I choose to teach at Keys because it is a community whose values align with my own; a place that holds the student at the very center of what matters.”
