Kindergarten Art Experiences: Beautiful Oops!

October 1, 2025

Our first unit in Kindergarten Art explores the universal experience of making mistakes: what defines them, the feelings we have when mistakes occur, and how to turn these unexpected inevitabilities into constructive and creative events.
Our main project in the unit is Beautiful Oops! Pictures.
Each student randomly receives an 8.5 x 11” color print of a famous, two-dimensional work of art. After talking about each work of art and the connected artist, the prints are given back to Teacher Julien. By the next art class, each print will “mysteriously” receive an Oops! such as a paint splotch, hand print, marker scribble, or hole.
Using acrylic pens, each Kindergarten Artist must transform their Oops! into a Beautiful Oops! by using its color and/or shape to create a person, place, or thing. Ideally, the newly-created Beautiful Oops! will connect to and add to the narrative of the original work of art.
