New This School Year! Mandated Reporter Training for All Volunteers
Keys School is committed to the safety and well-being of our community. In alignment with California’s SB 848 regulation, all chaperone and volunteer roles are now required to complete Mandated Reporter Training annually.

To support our community, Keys has arranged a virtual 90-minute training, provided by Liebert Cassidy Whitmore Legal and presented by Julie L. Strom, Senior Counsel. The training can be completed on your own schedule, must be completed no earlier than six weeks before the start of the school year, and must be renewed each year. For the 2026-27 school year, training can begin as early as July 13, 2026. Keys School will cover all costs of the LCW training, with no cost to participants.

Access to the training will become available on July 13. This training has been made available specifically for the Keys School community. We kindly ask that the link not be shared outside of Keys.

Tuberculosis Screening for All Volunteers
California law requires school staff and volunteers with frequent or prolonged contact with students to be free of tuberculosis (TB). We require all staff and volunteers to provide a TB risk assessment, and if risks are identified, a TB test and examination will be performed by a healthcare provider. Information and the required form are available here. Please use this form to submit your TB information.

Parent/Caregiver Chaperones
To act as a chaperone (non-driver) on school field trips or other school events, parents/caretivers must comply with all School policies and directives, including the requirement to undergo background checks by fingerprinting before providing any volunteer services that involve contact with students, as required by the school.

Outdoor Education
For drivers and chaperones participating in Grades 1-8 Outdoor Education trips, the School requires fingerprinting to be completed two weeks before the scheduled trip. The Outdoor Education Coordinator will provide detailed information as trip departures approach.

General Information
While volunteering on behalf of Keys School, parents/caregivers are reminded to follow the directions of school employees and guidelines as established in the Family Handbook. Additionally, volunteers are not covered under the School’s workers’ compensation policy.

Parent/Caregiver Drivers – Private or Rented Vehicles: All drivers of school vehicles agree to adhere to the following guidelines

• Receive van-driving instructions before becoming a school van driver.
• Comply with all California driving laws and regulations, including speed limits and hands-free phone usage for emergency purposes only.
• Ensure that the vehicle has undergone a pre-trip inspection, checking that the tires, horns, brakes, lights, and mirrors are functioning properly.
• Refrain from driving more than ten hours in any 24-hour day.
• Refrain from driving when the driver is feeling fatigued, suffering from illness, taking medication that could alter one’s ability to drive safely, or for any other reason is unable to drive safely.
• Avoid consumption of alcohol or any drugs or medications that may impact the ability to operate machinery, including driving, for twelve hours before driving.
• Employees and/or chaperones must not consume or be under the influence of alcohol or illegal or controlled substances when responsible for students and absolutely must not drive under the influence of alcohol or any controlled substances at any point.
• Ensure that all passengers and the driver wear seat belts, with one seat belt per person.
• Whenever possible, arrange for a second adult to ride in each vehicle to maintain order and safety.
• When the driver is the only adult in the vehicle, the driver should stop the vehicle safely before attending to any problem that would distract from driving.

When Keys School is unable to provide transportation with its own vehicles, parent/guardians or faculty vehicles with appropriate insurance coverage may be used. Each child needs to use a seat belt. Any child under eight years of age and under 4’9’’ must sit in a booster seat in the back seat of a vehicle when traveling by car or van. Parents/Guardians provide the safety seats. No child under 12 may be placed in a seat equipped with an airbag.

To drive a private or rented vehicle for any school event, copies of the following documents should be uploaded to the Magnus portal one week before the actual trip or event:

• A copy of a valid driver’s license
• A copy of the current auto insurance policy’s declaration page reflecting at least $100,000 in auto liability coverage
• A copy of a “Driver’s Record” from the State of California DMV

The school shall review the Driver’s Record and complete a DMV check to ascertain the driver’s safe driving record. A safe driving record means the driver is over 25, has at least three years of driving experience, and has only one moving violation in the past three years. A driver with two or more driving violations in the past three years or a major violation will not be permitted to drive on behalf of Keys School. Should the status of one’s driving record change due to minor or major violations during the course of the school year, it is each individual’s obligation to disclose and notify the school of such changes.
